I'm not going to lie to you guys: The scarf can be a somewhat tricky stylistic flourish to pull off. Seamlessly adding the accessory to your everyday repertoire will take time and a bit of patience. But if you're willing to put in the work, your dedication will pay dividends down the line.

See, the scarf is a delicate thing. Successfully nailing the look in a way that doesn't immediately announce to everyone around you "YO, I'M WEARING A FUCKING SCARF!" calls for a rare blend of studied casualness and a touch—and only a touch—of bold, unbridled confidence. Pay too much attention to the intricacies of your neckwear and you risk looking affected, like the horn-rimmed graduate student who led that Classics seminar you took freshman year (a.k.a., the type of dude your grandmother would've considered "dapper"). Pay too little attention to it, though, and your scarf will end up flailing helplessly behind you in the icy weather or, worse yet, dangling limply around your chest like some sad Little League participation medal.

The secret, then, lies in finding a balance somewhere in between. An intricately patterned version wrapped babushka-like around your head is the preferred look of style mavericks like A$AP Rocky, but if that feels too swerve-y (which, okay, fair), casually drape that thing around your neck and carry on. If function is the primary goal—function? I haven't heard that name in years!—try a soft cashmere style looped once and knotted securely to defend yourself from the elements (and from anyone mistaking you for the person they're supposed to meet with to discuss their essay on Ancient Greek literature).

Protect ya neck, gentlemen. It's really that simple.

Warmth, but affordable. This soft scarf mimics cashmere with how smooth it is.

This has all the playfulness of your favorite red scarf from childhood, with all the seriousness required of an adulthood scarf that can be worn with anything in your closet.

And if you find yourself so inclined, you can customize your own wool knit scarf, too. Polo Ralph Lauren provides the template—you do the rest.

COS makes a scarf cool and casual without doing too much. Made from wool, this'll keep you warm all day.

And for a simple scarf that goes with everything, Calvin Klein has you covered—for under $50, no less.

For a fun (but wearable) print, check out Gant's ultra-warm, fringed scarf.

The cold season is dull and gray and dreary enough—add some color in a sophisticated way. This gradient scarf does the work for you.

Urban Outfitters does warmth on a budget to a T. Down to the fringed ends, we love every inch of this scarf.

Ah, the iconic Acne Studios scarf. You knew it'd be in here somewhere! The Instagram influencers and hypebeasts were right about this one, though—it's fuckin' awesome.

Simple and minimalistic, this scarf looks just as good with a sweater and jeans as it does with an overcoat and suit.

Or, for an actual cashmere scarf, opt for this sleek number by Everlane.

Barbour knows what's up, and what's up is this: tartan! You can't go wrong with it, especially in a color palette like this, which never goes out of style.

This one's pricier, but for a good reason: the wool and cashmere blend makes for a softness you'll want to bury your whole face into.

And, of course, the iconic, classic Burberry scarf. Tried and tested and true, it instantly elevates your look and warms your neck.

If anybody out there knows how to keep you (or your neck) warm and cozy, it's UGG.

A cashmere scarf is the ultimate cold-weather luxury. Loro Piana sets the bar high, with a chic and effortless look that also has silk and linen.

For a monogrammed, classy affair, this is the scarf for you. It goes with everything, but manages not to be dull.

For a bolder and brighter look, AMI Paris has you covered. We can certainly see Emily (of Emily in Paris fame, of course) wearing this, stolen from the closet of a chic French paramour.

Pinstripes are synonymous with classiness. So is cashmere. This scarf is like your finest suit, but around your neck.

Loewe's logo, all over a wool and cashmere scarf? If we didn't want to wear this so badly, we'd have it framed up on the wall instead.
